Asbestos Abatement Containment

What is Asbestos Abatement?

While often used interchangeably with "removal," asbestos abatement is a broader term that encompasses all methods used to safely manage, control, and eliminate asbestos hazards in a building. This can include full physical removal, encapsulation (sealing the material), or enclosure (building an airtight barrier around it).

In Edmonton, older commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and homes built before 1990 frequently require professional abatement before significant renovations or demolitions can occur.

Alberta OHS Classification Types

The Alberta Asbestos Abatement Manual classifies abatement projects into three distinct risk levels based on the potential for fiber release. We are certified to handle all three:

Type 1 (Low Risk)

Involves non-friable materials (like intact vinyl floor tiles or undisturbed drywall compound) that are not actively breaking down. Minimal containment is required, though respiratory protection is still utilized.

Type 2 (Medium Risk)

Involves minor disturbance of friable materials (like ceiling stipple or pipe wrap) covering a small area. This requires partial containment, HEPA vacuums, and wet wiping methods to prevent airborne contamination.

Type 3 (High Risk)

The most hazardous classification, involving the large-scale removal or disturbance of highly friable materials. This requires full negative-pressure containment enclosures, decontamination shower facilities for workers, and continuous air monitoring.

Our Abatement Process

1

Risk Assessment & Planning

We begin by thoroughly reviewing your hazardous materials survey and creating a site-specific Notice of Project (NOP) to submit to Alberta OHS 72 hours before work begins.

2

Containment Setup

Depending on the operation type, we establish secure barriers using heavy poly sheeting. For Type 3 operations, we install negative air machines equipped with HEPA filters to ensure no fibers can escape the work zone.

3

Safe Execution

Our technicians, wearing full Tyvek suits and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR), wet down the materials and carefully execute the abatement plan—whether that is removal or encapsulation.

4

Clearance & Certification

Following final cleanup and visual inspection, an independent consultant conducts air monitoring to verify the space is entirely safe before the containment is removed.
